Remote Access and Cloud Management, Without the Complexity

Nx Cloud is the cloud services layer of the Nx Witness Video Management System (VMS), built on AWS infrastructure to provide secure, seamless remote access and centralised management of Nx Witness sites from anywhere in the world — without requiring complex network configuration, open ports, or VPN setup. Once a site is connected to Nx Cloud, operators can view live and recorded video from any cloud-connected camera directly in a browser via the Nx Cloud web client, or through the Nx Desktop and Nx Mobile applications on iOS and Android, all through a single unified login. An unlimited number of sites can be connected to a single Nx Cloud account, making it particularly well suited to managed service providers and large enterprise customers managing dispersed deployments. Access sharing is straightforward — administrators can grant users access to any connected site using just an email address and custom role-based permissions. Security is built into the architecture at every level: all remote connections are proxied through Nx Cloud using TLS-encrypted communications, video traffic between servers and clients is encrypted to prevent man-in-the-middle interception, and two-factor authentication is available to further protect cloud account access. Critically, Nx Cloud acts purely as a secure connection mediator — user video traffic and credentials are never stored or decrypted by Nx Cloud relay servers, ensuring data sovereignty remains with the customer at all times.

Nx Desktop is the primary rich-media client application for the Nx Witness VMS, providing operators with a powerful, flexible, and highly responsive interface for viewing, managing, and configuring their entire surveillance system from a single screen. The application supports simultaneous viewing of up to 64 live video feeds on a single layout on a 64-bit OS, with full compatibility for MJPEG, H.264, and H.265 streaming formats, as well as offline media playback including AVI, MKV, MP4, MOV, and a range of other common video and image formats. Its distinctive Flex GRID interface allows operators to create unlimited customisable and shareable layouts that can integrate live camera feeds, web content, and IoT device data into a single unified view — with Showreel and Video Wall modes available for monitoring centres requiring timed or multi-screen display configurations. Archive investigation is fast and intuitive, with Smart Motion search, time and date filtering, video analytics metadata, and bookmark-based search enabling operators to locate specific footage quickly across an entire year’s worth of recordings. The built-in IFTTT-style Rules Engine allows operators to configure automated system responses triggered by camera events, IoT devices, or external HTTP inputs — without requiring any coding knowledge. Nx Desktop runs on Windows, Ubuntu Linux, and macOS, uses HTTP and SSL for all server communications, and employs adaptive scaling technology to optimise performance and minimise CPU and network usage — making it equally capable on modest workstations as it is on high-powered enterprise hardware.

Nx Mobile is the lightweight, low-latency mobile application for the Nx Witness VMS, built on the same codebase as Nx Desktop and designed to give operators full control of their surveillance systems from any iOS or Android device. Available for free download and requiring no complex configuration, the app connects to any Nx system effortlessly via Nx Cloud, allowing operators to switch between an unlimited number of sites with a single login. Live view is delivered through a custom low-latency media player with live updating thumbnails that provide instant previews of any camera feed without needing to open the full stream — a practical advantage when monitoring large numbers of cameras on the go. Smart Motion Search allows operators to select any specific area within a camera view to search for motion within that region across live or recorded footage, while advanced object search — introduced in Generation 6 — enables on-the-go analytics to locate specific people or vehicles directly within the app. PTZ cameras are fully supported with purpose-built touch controls for precision pan, tilt, and zoom, and built-in fisheye dewarping provides a natural, linear view for easier footage review without distortion. Soft Triggers allow operators to manually fire any configured event from the app — including integrations with access control, fire systems, and building automation — enabling real response from anywhere. All communications between Nx Mobile and Nx Servers use HTTPS and SSL encryption, with additional support for encrypted video traffic to prevent man-in-the-middle interception, ensuring the same level of security in the field as at the workstation.
