What Makes a Camera a Commercial Camera
The gap between a consumer camera and a commercial security camera is not resolution. It is everything built around the sensor.
Commercial devices are made to hold a scene for a decade in Australian conditions — 50°C loading docks, coastal salt, dust, vibration and deliberate interference. They carry independently tested ingress and impact ratings rather than claims, run on standard PoE so a single cable delivers power and data, and conform to ONVIF so you are never locked to one management platform.
They are also network devices, and this is where procurement most often goes wrong. A camera fleet is an attack surface. Commercial-grade devices ship with signed firmware, secure boot and hardware-backed device identity, and their manufacturers publish vulnerabilities and patch them on a schedule. Consumer devices generally do neither, which is why a cheap camera on a corporate network is a cyber security problem before it is a security camera.
The last difference is the one buyers feel three years in: lifecycle. Commercial manufacturers publish firmware support windows, keep model families in production, and keep mounts and accessories available long after purchase. That is the difference between a camera fleet you can maintain and one you have to replace.
